  Bios of Panel Speakers and Moderator:

Borys Mejia:

Borys A. Mejía Aguirre is the Trade Commissioner of Ecuador in Chicago, Illinois. After obtaining his Masters in Business from the Army Polytechnic School in Quito, Ecuador, his Masters in Finance from ITESM in Monterrey, Mexico, as well as completing the Advanced Executive Program from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, Mr. Mejia has acted as the Trade Commissioner of Ecuador in New York (2001 – 2003), in Turkey (2009 – 2011) and currently in Chicago. Mr. Mejia has also worked as a Professor at various Ecuadorian universities (Universidad del Pacífico, Universidad Internacional), and in the private sector as the Export Manager of tropical fruits for the Ecuadorian company Yahumin, and as the Executive Vice-President of the media group Editores MMA Asociados.  

The Trade Commission of Ecuador in Chicago is one of the four offices that PRO ECUADOR has successfully established in the United States. Our goal is twofold: facilitate trade between Ecuadorian exporters and interested importers from the Midwest Region of the United States, and attract potential investors for Ecuador’s many ongoing public and private projects.

Martin Caro:

Martin Caro has a professional experience of over ten years in the fields of international business, logistics and customs. Martín started his career as Head of Customs Clearance Operations for a major customs broker in Manzanillo, the most important commercial port of Mexico and where he is originally from. Later, he worked as Customs Coordinator at Prodensa Group, a company focused on attracting foreign investment into Mexico. Afterwards, Martín worked as Logistics Projects Manager at Prologistik, a logistics company subsidiary of CEMEX Mexico.

Martin joined ProMéxico in 2009 as Deputy Trade and Investment Commissioner at the ProMéxico office in Seoul, South Korea. After this opportunity he was invited to join the ProMéxico North America team in Washington D.C. His main responsibilities in this position were to implement and develop the economic promotion strategy for all the North American offices. Recently, Martin was promoted to lead the ProMéxico office in Chicago as Trade & Investment Commissioner.

Martin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business from Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, as well as a Masters Degree in International Political Economy from King’s College London in the United Kingdom.

Marcelo Boffi:

 Is the Deputy Consul Consulate General of the Argentine Republic in Chicago. Marcelo has an International Relations Degree from El Salvador University, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Prior to serving as the Deputy Consul Consulate General of the Argentine Republic in Chicago, Marcelo was the Secretary of Embassy of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in the Republic of Korea. Prior thereto, he worked in the press office of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship - Buenos Aires, Argentina. Marcelo was also a Professor of International Relations at the University of El Salvador - Buenos Aires, Argentina

Jesse Rowell:

Jesse leads the global client-facing team at Aperian Global in support of customer relationships and new business development. He has been with the company since 2007 when he joined in a client strategy capacity. Having worked prior at IBM, Harbinger Corporation and Lowendal Masai, the last 17 years his career has focused on cross-border business development and account management. In addition to living in parts of South America, he has worked across the globe in various market development roles. Jesse has a Bachelor of Science in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration in International Marketing from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tom Hagle:
Since starting with the Illinois Office of Trade & Investment in 1989, in addition to other responsibilities over this period, Tom has worked in conjunction with the State of Illinois Canadian Office in Toronto and the Latin American Office in Mexico City in assisting innumerable Illinois firms to expand their exports to the Canadian and Mexican markets.

Prior to joining the Illinois Office of Trade and Investment, Tom was an Independent Financial Commodity Trader at the Chicago Board of Trade. Prior to his stint at the Board of Trade, he was an Equity Partner and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at a medium sized logistics firm.

A lifelong resident of Illinois, Tom graduated from Northern Illinois University and served honorably in the United States Naval Air Corp.

Jennifer Watson:

Jennifer Watson advises clients on a broad range of business matters, including negotiating and documenting a wide variety of transactions, corporate reorganizations and restructurings, private placements and general corporate and shareholder matters. She assists clients with entity selection and formation of corporations, limited liability companies and other business entities, including counseling clients on the international, federal and state tax implications of these structures.
 

Ms. Watson works closely with companies on mergers and acquisitions. She advises her clients on structuring transactions, including solutions for parties involved in unique and non-traditional transactions, and drafting and negotiating principal transaction agreements, in addition to conducting due diligence and requisite filings.

As part of her employee benefits practice, she designs, drafts, reviews and counsels clients on executive compensation and employment agreements, qualified and non-qualified retirement plans and welfare benefit plans.

Ms. Watson is admitted to practice in Illinois. She obtained her J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law in 2001. She received her B.A., summa cum laude, in Accounting from North Central College in 1997. Prior to entering law school, Ms. Watson passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination. She is a member of the Illinois CPA Society, Chicago Bar Association, and the American Bar Association Corporate Documents and Process Committee and Committee on Mergers & Acquisitions.
