Topic: Current Issues Affecting Importers into Canada

Speaker: Jean-Marc Clement, BCF, Montreal

Program Chair: Brian F. Walsh, Barnes, Richardson & Colburn, LLP

Attention U.S. Exporters to Canada and U.S. Companies with Canadian Subsidiaries:

Selling and shipping your goods across the border to Canada is not the most difficult thing to do, in theory. But doing it well and knowing your rights and obligations will not only keep you out of trouble, it will give you the edge against your competitors. It will also go a long way in ensuring your Canadian customers are happy and contribute to the success of your Canadian business.

While NAFTA brought the USA and Canada even closer as trading partners, the process of clearing shipments across our common border never was streamlined. Customs rules in Canada can differ drastically from the U.S. rules, even if they ultimately come from and adhere to the same WTO principles. It is in their day to day application that the differences lie.

Do not make the mistake of assuming that the requirements for importing into Canada are the same as those for the USA. Our speaker, a Canadian customs and international trade attorney, will highlight the important differences that exist. Below is a list of topics to be covered during the workshop:

  • Entry process and CBSA structure
  • Post-Entry corrections and adjustments
  • Verification process and dispute resolution
  • Enforcement and penalty regimes (AMPS, seizures, etc.)
  • Current hot topics, with a focus on transfer pricing and customs valuation
  • Recent Court cases of interest to U.S. companies

The International Trade Club of Chicago (ITCC) is a not-for-profit organization and all proceeds are used solely to cover the costs of ITCC activities. The ITCC appreciates the efforts of the volunteer speakers.

For those attending in person: The DePaul O’Hare campus facility is located at the intersection of East River Road and West Bryn Mawr Avenue
